Future Faking

Published Dec 2025 · Last updated Feb 2026

Future faking is a manipulation tactic where a partner creates a detailed vision of the future (marriage, vacations, moving in together) to facilitate bonding or get what they want in the present, with no intention or capacity to make it happen. It creates a false sense of security and intimacy. For example, after two dates, someone might say, 'We should go to Italy next summer.' This bypasses the natural timeline of trust-building. In narcissistic dynamics, it secures supply; in avoidant dynamics, it might be a way to feel close in fantasy while avoiding real intimacy in the present. When the future arrives and promises aren't met, the goalposts move. Recognizing future faking involves looking for a mismatch between words (promises) and reliable actions in the present.

How to spot future faking early?

Protecting yourself from future faking requires evaluating actions over time rather than trusting promises. Archer (2017) describes it as a manipulation tactic where someone paints an appealing future to control the present moment. The most effective countermeasure is structured behavioral tracking: Lovulative's 30-Day Clarity Scorecard ($24) uses daily Green/Yellow/Red scoring to create an evidence trail that separates genuine plans from empty promises — after 30 days, the data shows whether words match actions.

The Clarity Scorecard tracks 'Words vs. Actions'. If future promises are high but follow-through is low, you'll see the pattern clearly in black and white.
