Hoovering

Published Dec 2025 · Last updated Feb 2026

Hoovering (named after the vacuum cleaner) is a manipulation tactic used by narcissists and toxic partners to 'suck' a victim back into the relationship after a breakup or period of distance. It often occurs when the abuser senses the victim is moving on or when their new source of supply has failed. Tactics vary from benign ('Just checking in', 'Happy Birthday') to dramatic ('I'm in the hospital', 'I've changed'). Hoovers are often calculated to target the victim's empathy or insecurity. They are not evidence of changed behavior but are attempts to regain control and access to supply. Responding to a hoover typically restarts the cycle of abuse.

What are examples of hoovering?

Defending against hoovering requires recognizing the tactic and having a pre-written response ready before it happens. Arabi (2017) describes hoovering as the manipulator's attempt to suck you back in after you've set boundaries — through false apologies, love bombing, or manufactured crises. The most effective defense is a short, boundaried reply that you've prepared in advance, so emotional activation can't override your decision. Lovulative's Text Script Vault ($24) includes closure and no-contact scripts designed for exactly these moments.

A hoover is a test. Pass it by doing nothing. If you must respond, use a 'Final' script to reiterate your boundary, then block.
