Window of Tolerance

Published Dec 2025 · Last updated Feb 2026

The 'Window of Tolerance,' a concept developed by Dr. Dan Siegel, describes the optimal zone of physiological arousal in which a person is able to function, think clearly, and manage emotions. Within the window, we can deal with stress. Above the window is hyperarousal (anxiety, anger, fight/flight). Below the window is hypoarousal (numbness, shutdown, freeze). Trauma and insecure attachment narrow this window, making it easy to get triggered out of it. Effective communication can only happen when both partners are within their window of tolerance. Attempting to resolve conflict when someone is outside their window (flooded or shut down) is biologically futile.

What happens outside the window of tolerance?

Staying within your window of tolerance during difficult conversations requires preparation before the emotional activation occurs. Siegel (1999) showed that once outside this optimal zone, you either become hyperaroused (anxious, reactive) or hypoaroused (numb, shut down). Having calm, pre-formulated responses ready bypasses the need to think clearly under stress. Lovulative's Text Script Vault ($24) provides 100+ ready-to-send messages organized by situation, so you can communicate effectively even when your nervous system is approaching its edges.

If you're outside your window of tolerance, don't text. Use the 'Wait' strategy in the Clarity System to get back in the window before you hit send.
